Serving over 6,500 students across its academic programs, Tharaka University is actively shaping the future of its students and the region. The University’s demonstration farms serve as practical learning spaces, where cutting-edge techniques are implemented and shared. Further, the University has constructed a 14-million-liter water harvesting pan and additional water systems to support both its operations and the surrounding communities. These initiatives, alongside the 40,000 trees planted on campus, have transformed the environment, improved the local microclimate and fostered long-term sustainability.

In the mining sector, Tharaka University is laying the groundwork for a Mining Centre of Excellence. Plans to establish a Pilot Copper Processing Plant are already in motion, aiming to harness the region’s rich mineral resources.
This initiative will boost the local economy while positioning Kenya as a key player in the global mining sector. Through innovative programs in geosciences and community health, the University is also addressing the unique challenges of the ASALs, driving socio-economic development in the region.
