Tharaka University Students’ Welfare Department, in collaboration with Guidance and Counseling, conducted a sensitization campaign to promote awareness of mental health and addiction. The day’s slogan was ‘Struggles end where support begins’ and a clarion call for freedom over addiction. Creating emphasis by chants: Say no to drugs!!, Say No to masturbation!!, Drugs Destroy Dreams!!, Say No to Gambling!!
Representing the guest speaker, the regional manager (NACADA) was Agnes Kanyingi, deputy regional manager at (NACADA) Eastern Region, who talked about the preference for drugs and substance abuse among university students, one out of nine students use at least one substance.

Dr. Shadrack Munanu, Dean of Students, emphasized that students and staff have a collective social responsibility to support and refer students struggling with any psychological issue for counseling.
Madam Harriet Kagendo, Psychology Lecturer at Tharaka University, advised that seeking counseling is important towards overcoming addiction and that addiction is not a respecter of any man.
The event was graced by Dr. David Kiptui, Lecturer of Psychology, Mr. Isaiah K. Njeru, Student Counselor, Titus Kajiita, clerk at the Dean’s office, TUSA leaders led by the president, Mr. Peter Muthomi, and the student peer counsellors.
