Tharaka University has been selected to host Kenya’s national celebration of World Environment Day on June 5, 2025, under the global theme “Ending Plastic Pollution.” This theme highlights the urgent need to tackle the escalating environmental crisis caused by plastic waste and reinforces our collective responsibility to safeguard the planet.

Situated in Tharaka Nithi County, Tharaka University provides an ideal venue for the World Environment Day celebrations. The region is known for its rich biodiversity, vital water catchment areas, and vibrant agricultural sector—natural assets that are increasingly endangered by plastic pollution.
The county also stands out for its strong community engagement in environmental conservation, with schools and youth groups actively involved in clean-up drives and tree-planting initiatives. The 2025 celebration aims to promote reusable, biodegradable, and eco-friendly alternatives. It will foster collaboration among government agencies, civil society, the private sector, and local communities, offering a platform to share best practices in recycling, waste reduction, and sustainable production. Ultimately, the event seeks to inspire collective action toward a plastic-free and environmentally resilient Kenya through innovative policies and grassroots engagement.
In the weeks leading up to June 5, a series of pre-event activities will take place. These include community clean-ups, tree planting drives, public exhibitions, school debates, quizzes, panel discussions, and a football tournament—all designed to raise awareness about plastic pollution.
The celebration also complements national initiatives such as the 15-billion-tree campaign and the enhancement of waste management systems. During this period, Tharaka University will serve as a central hub for environmental dialogue and community participation.

The event will be attended by dignitaries and bring together environmental leaders, innovators, and citizens from across the country.
It will showcase practical solutions and accelerate the transition toward sustainable living. The 2025 World Environment Day celebration will reaffirm Kenya’s enduring commitment to environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and the protection of its unique biodiversity
